G7 countries agree to cooperate on AI, supply chains

โ˜•News - Yesterday, industry ministers from the Group of Seven major democracies reached an agreement to coordinate regulations for the advancement of artificial intelligence and to strengthen supply chains in crucial sectors such as semiconductors, according to the Italian presidency.

Industry Minister Adolfo Urso informed reporters after the meeting in Verona, Italy, that countries fully agreed to align rules to promote equal advancement of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

๐ŸฅธWhat's more? Urso also mentioned that the ministers plan to promote joint investments in AI, with a focus on ensuring the participation of small and medium-sized businesses.

He noted that the G7 industry ministers have also agreed to establish a permanent working group to examine strategies for addressing policies aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor production.

Urso added that in light of recent conflicts, there's a heightened need to achieve strategic independence. He stated that in line with this, the G7 plans to collaborate with the European Commission on semiconductors to safeguard their economy and industries.

EU asks major platforms how they're addressing GenAI risks ahead of elections

๐Ÿ“ฌNews - The European Commission has sent formal requests for information to Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, TikTok, and X, seeking details on how they manage risks associated with the use of generative AI technology.

๐Ÿ‘€What exactly are they looking for? The Commission has asked these companies to provide more information on how they are addressing risks related to generative AI on their platforms. This includes concerns such as "hallucinations" or AI generating false information, the dissemination of deepfakes, and the automated manipulation of services that may impact voters.

Additionally, the Commission is seeking information and internal documents regarding risk assessments and mitigation strategies related to the influence of generative AI on electoral processes, dissemination of illegal content, protection of fundamental rights, gender-based violence, safeguarding minors, and mental well-being.

๐Ÿค”What will they do with this information though? For those who don't know, the EU has been seeking input on election security regulations for Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and is in the process of developing official guidelines. In line with this, the Commission mentioned that the information it gathers from its requests to the companies will partly contribute to shaping the EU's guidelines.

AI helps astronomers discover, classify 430,000 new galaxies

๐Ÿ”ญNews - With the help of AI, astronomers have discovered about 400,000 spiral galaxies and 30,000 ring galaxies using data from the Subaru Telescope. This builds on the work of the citizen science project "GALAXY CRUISE," which aims to classify the vast number of galaxies that remain unclassified, with the help of volunteers.

๐Ÿ™„How did AI help? Galaxies exhibit diverse shapes reflecting their evolution, making manual classification overwhelming for astronomers analyzing data from telescopes like the Subaru Telescope. For context, in the GALAXY CRUISE project, over 10,000 citizen astronomers volunteered to do the classifications. But even divided among thousands of volunteers, the process remained time-consuming.

In this recent study, led by Rhythm Shimakawa from Waseda University, the AI was trained on 20,000 galaxies classified by humans as part of the GALAXY CRUISE   project. The AI classification process was remarkably quick, taking less than an hour even for the vast dataset of 700,000 galaxies. Within this short timeframe, it successfully categorized 400,000 galaxies as spiral and 30,000 as ring galaxies, significantly expediting the process.

Additionally, despite ring galaxies constituting less than 5% of the total galaxy population, the 30,000 ring galaxies identified by AI as part of this study provided a sample size large enough for meaningful statistical analysis.

๐ŸŒžTechnical jargon simplified

  • Natural Language Understanding (NLU): It is a subset of natural language processing that aids machines in grasping the intended meaning of human language, while also considering its slight variations and potential grammatical errors.

  • Natural Language Generation (NLG): It is the process through which machines transform structured data into text or speech that is understandable to humans.

  • Deep learning: It is a type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to learn from data. Artificial neural networks are inspired by the structure and function of the human brain, and they are made up of interconnected nodes that can process information and learn from experience.
