Cybersecurity expert Mikko Hyppönen shares top AI threats for 2024

👨🏻‍💻News - In a recent interview, 54-year-old cybersecurity expert Mikko Hyppönen, discussed the transformative impact of AI. While expressing optimism about its positive effects, he also expressed worry about the cyber threats it may pose, outlining his top concerns for 2024.

🦹🏻‍♂️What to be on the lookout for -

  • Deepfakes - In 2023, deepfake fraud attempts spiked by 3,000%, as reported by Onfido, a London-based ID verification firm. However, Hyppönen believes that this surge is only the tip of the iceberg, predicting a rapid escalation in deepfake-related financial scams due to growing accessibility and affordability.

  • Deep scams - Here, "deep" signifies the extensive scale of these scams. Hyppönen anticipates AI automation will turbocharge various such scams, including investment, phishing, property, ticket, and romance scams, by automating manual processes. Recalling the Tinder Swindler, who scammed around $10 million from online acquaintances, Hyppönen stated that if armed with AI image generators and translation tools, the scale of potential victims could have been vast.

  • Zero-day exploits - These attacks exploit vulnerabilities in software or hardware before developers can fix them, earning the name "zero-day" as developers have no time to address the issue before attacks happen. While AI shows promise in identifying these threats, there's also the unsettling capability for AI to generate such exploits. Based on his team's research, Hyppönen foresees this becoming a reality shortly.

  • Fully automated malware campaigns - As cybersecurity defenses integrate AI for threat detection and response, malicious actors are also leveraging AI to create more sophisticated malware. This dynamic sets the stage for an ongoing conflict between automated defense and attack systems, earning the top position in Hyppönen's 2024 AI threat list.

UK terrorism legislation adviser pushes for new laws to combat AI-driven terrorism

🤺News - The UK's independent reviewer of terrorism legislation has emphasized the requirement for new laws to address AI chatbots that could influence users negatively, leading to harmful actions.

🪬Why is this needed? The government's adviser, Jonathan Hall KC pointed out that the government's Online Safety Act, in force since last year, isn't well-suited for advanced and generative AI.

Referencing his own experience in researching the matter, Hall noted that he visited the character.ai chatbot website while posing as a member of the public. During this interaction, he engaged with several AI chatbots, including one described as a senior leader of the Islamic State group, that attempted to recruit him to join the terror organization.

In an interesting twist, Hall observed that the website's terms and conditions specifically restrict human users from submitting content promoting terrorism or violent extremism, while the same restrictions do not apply to the content generated by its bots.

💁🏻‍♂️In conclusion - While acknowledging the challenges of dealing with anonymous users, Hall argued that the only solution, if people persist in training terrorist chatbots, is to implement new laws. He stressed the importance of laws that discourage harmful online conduct, even extending their scope to big tech platforms when necessary. This, he believes, requires updated terrorism and online safety laws suited to the age of AI.

New AI models show potential for early detection of liver cancer, study finds

🏥News - According to recent a study published in eGastroenterology, advanced AI technology could significantly transform Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis, potentially enabling earlier detection and improving patient outcomes.

🩻What is HCC & how can AI help?

  • HCC is the most common type of liver cancer. It is a major health concern globally, especially with rising rates in North Africa and East Asia.

  • Although potentially curable in its early stages, HCC is often missed until later stages by current diagnostic methods, like AFP testing and ultrasound.

  • Early detection through AI would enable effective treatments like surgery and liver transplants, which are only viable in the initial stages.

⛑️A deep dive into AI's role - According to the research, recent advances in AI, particularly in deep learning (DL) and neural networks, have shown significant potential for enhancing HCC diagnosis. With these advancements, newer AI models have become skilled at analyzing extensive imaging data, effortlessly identifying subtle patterns that go unnoticed by the human eye.

This could reduce diagnostic variability, optimize data analysis, and reallocate healthcare resources, leading to more patients receiving timely treatment, improved survival rates, and reduced healthcare costs.

Furthermore, there is potential for extending these applications to personalized medicine and monitoring treatment responses as researchers explore the potential of AI in diverse aspects of HCC treatment.
